Meet the Teacher... Me!

It's been a fantastic few weeks in the studio, face to face with our dancers at last! After the restrictions of online classes, it’s been just lovely getting to know all our dancers properly. That being said, I thought it was only fair for me to share a bit about myself too

...so, here it is!

I began my dance journey at the wonderful Swaby Dance Centre in my hometown of Grimsby, Lincolnshire. I also successfully auditioned for the Yorkshire Ballet Scholarship Centre and attended weekly classes as a scholar there for 6 years. I then went on to study for a BA(Hons) Dance at Manchester Metropolitan University, from which I graduated with First Class. During my time at university I gained more experience in street dance, and was Captain of the university’s street dance crew in my final year.

I moved up to Edinburgh in 2014 to study on the MSc Dance Science and Education programme at the University of Edinburgh, graduating the following year with Distinction. During that year I fell in love with Scotland so much that I stayed!

Since then, I've taught extensively across Edinburgh, developing a particular interest in encouraging children to discover, challenge and express themselves through dance. I firmly believe that if children are provided with a strong foundation, the opportunities are endless. The children I teach continue to inspire me with their energy and creativity, so I make it my job to bring out everything they have to offer.

In between teaching I've contributed to dance research, presenting at the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS) conferences in Hong Kong (2016) and Finland (2018). Both were fantastic experiences and I learned so much that I’ve been able to apply to my teaching. I've also had work published in the Research in Dance Education journal.

As well as dancing, I enjoy writing (hence me doing this blog!) and am a reviewer for Theatre Weekly. I also enjoy music – playing keyboard, piano, and more recently have taken up the ukulele! Teaching certainly keeps me on my toes (!) but just to make extra sure, I’m a keen runner hoping to complete a half marathon at some point!
