In class recently, some of our dancers were telling me what they want to be when they're older. Some of the jobs that came up were: primary school teacher, artist, comic-book designer, vet, doctor, and dance teacher!
This discussion really made me think about my role as their dance teacher, and it reminded me of what I'm striving to achieve with RMB Dance.
I'm not "training" my students to be world-class performers. Nor am I moulding them into dance professionals. Of course, some dance schools do offer very intensive training with the aim that several of their students will go on to have careers in dance or performance. This is brilliant in it's own right, and paves the way for the theatre and performance industry in the future.
However, my aim for RMB Dance is quite different. I like to think of it as using dance to help children blossom, so that they can do and be anything they wish. Through dance class, they are developing confidence, resilience, determination and a strong work ethic - skills that are surely necessary in any career.
I also think it's brilliant that many of our dancers have such a huge passion for dance even though it's not in their future career plans! We have SO much fun in classes because we just love to dance and move! What's more, they genuinely want to learn and improve their skills, and this is what makes my job such a joy. And for our dancers who do want dance to be in their career, I'd like to think that classes provide a strong foundation for that too - it's all about balance.
So whilst many of my dancers might not go on to have a career in dance, a love of dance is something we all have in common right now, and I'd like to think it will always be part of them.
Whatever they go on to do, I hope dance class gives them skills and confidence to achieve their dreams ⭐️
