Dance is for EVERYONE!

Most people who know me know that I'm a huge "Strictly Come Dancing" fan! This year, I've been amazed by one of the celebrity contestants and his professional partner. Chris McCausland is the first blind contestant to take part in Strictly, and is partnered by professional Dianne Buswell.

Watching their journey over the past few weeks has really got me thinking about how dance genuinely is for absolutely everyone.

What's moved me in particular is seeing Chris really connecting emotionally with dancing. Perhaps, without the sense of sight, having to rely on other senses to learn the movements increases emotional sensitivity.

For many dancers, particularly those who take part in competitions, a huge part of dance practise is trying to make a move look "good". Alternatively, as in Chris' case, without sight the focus instead is on how a movement feels. In this way, perhaps the dancing is then absolutely genuine and personal, because the person is dancing in the way that is unique to their body rather than trying to match how the move looks on someone else.

In RMB Dance classes, I like to think we do this to an extent. Particularly in our creative tasks and freestyle opportunities, I try to encourage the children to express themselves and move in a way that feels good to them. Whilst I of course provide visual demonstrations and use visual props, which are undoubtedly valuable, I do try to emphasise individuality over being identical. I also think there's something to be said for considering the use of other senses in teaching.

Of course, the teacher has to work incredibly hard to find ways to teach and transfer knowledge to a person without sight. I'm somewhat amazed by how well Chris' partner Dianne has done this. I try to keep learning and moving forward in my teaching skills, and this is certainly something I'll be thinking more about. I already have several ideas and am excited to try them out with our dancers over the coming weeks and months!

Chris' performances also confirm that dance is for absolutely everyone. With bravery, enthusiasm, trust and a willing teacher, everyone can access and reap the benefits of dance participation.

Even if you're not a "Strictly" fan, I still encourage you to check out Chris and Dianne's performances!👏
